Animated GIF

Now this question is mine.

I'm trying to make an animated GIF. I do the whole later thing, test it and it works. I optimize it and save it but when I try to put it on my journal, all that comes up is a white box with nothing in it. I've tried 5 times.

How do you make animated gifs and what am I doing wrong?

This isn't going to be very helpful, as it's been a long time since I last tried an animated gif. But I think it has something to do with the type of .gif -- you have to pick the right one. I generally save it to my hard drive as a .gif (after first saving a .xcf just in case something goes wrong) and then using Opera or Firefox on the local file just to make sure it works. Also, make sure the size isn't too much for LJ to handle. If it's too big, it won't upload.

How are you testing after you optimize and save?

Can you provide a download link for the .XCF and non-functioning gif?

I'm not tech savvy so you lost me on that.

I just meant put the files somewhere they can be downloaded, eg. sendspace.

Well, this is under 40k but the fade effect is pretty affected because of the drastically reduced palette size.

so how did you get it to do that? i couldn't get it under 40 fighting with it?

You have to start out with the color mode as RGB. (Check with Image -> Mode and see what's checked). If it's not RGB, set it to RGB.

After that, select Image -> Mode -> Indexed, select first option (custom palette size, I think it's called--it's the one that lets you enter a number) and enter the number of colors in the palette. Reducing that number reduces the size of the gif.

Then optimize for gif, etc. as usual

I've been following this to read the better answers. I think your image looks smashing and I appreciate the clear instructions.

Thanks! The other thing I fiddle with when converting to indexed mode is dithering. "Positioned" tends to make animations look better with a reduced palette size (like in this icon). I used "none" for [info]sapphyre_myst's icon though because positioned made it look too fuzzy/ugly.

I don't think, it's because of Gimp.

1. Did you test your gif by open it in a web browser ?
2. Did you use an Image Hosting ?

1. yes
2. no

maybe it's the problem, I don't know how Lj works, but host your gif (on imageshack for example) and try again.
It's an icon ?

its an icon for a story i have on here. it works just fine on the photobucket. but trying to put the 100x100 icon on here to use gets me a "please move box to cut image" crap.

Oh, is the file over 40k in size? There's a limit for LJ icons.

i was gonna ask how to compress it to work but i'm just giving up. i've been fighting with it for 5 hours and nothing is working.

What I usually have to do is resize it down to 60x60 or remove frames. 40k is VERY small for animated gifs.

if i make it smaller, you can't read the writing. if i remove frames, it doesn't look right period.

i'll just ask someone to make one for me and hand over the pictures since all i can make is banners.
